Stendahl is perhaps most famous for his publication of the article "The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West." Krister Stendahl, New Testament scholar, ecumenist, former Dean of Harvard Divinity School, Bishop in the Church of Sweden, advocate for women and lesbian and gay people, and pioneer in Jewish-Christian relations, died on Tuesday, April 15 in Boston. Krister Stendahl, a former dean of the Harvard Divinity School and a bishop in Sweden whose scholarship opened new ways of interpreting the Apostle Paul and whose activism pushed churches toward Krister Stendahl, the former Lutheran bishop of Stockholm, Sweden performed an act of such grace to Latter-Day Saints during the dedication of the Stockholm temple. I first heard this story over at the LDS Perspectives Podcast, but this retelling of the story from Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor is beautiful. Krister Stendahl had a long career at Harvard Divinity School.
